80 years ago

York City Council had taken on board the recommendation that the proposed new Technical School, Day School of Commerce, and School of Art should be erected in Hungate, a recently cleared area of the city, an alternative suggestion to the Glutch estate, Poppleton Road, where concerns had been expressed at the increase of juvenile crime in the city. The Council rescinded a decision improving Beckfield Lane, Acomb, by private contract and decided to accept the original recommendation of the Streets and Buildings Committee that the work should be done by the City Engineer’s Department at an estimated cost of £17,000. Easingwold cinema’s main attraction for the week was “After The Thin man,” a thrilling mystery sequel to “The Thin Man.” The romantic thriller continued with the same movie line up, not forgetting their dog, proving to be twice as funny as the first film. And Wally Beadle and Norma Dare headed the cast of “Darts,” at the Empire Theatre, York.

50 years ago

Lancashire Cricket Club were prepared to offer Brian Close, Yorkshire and former England captain, a “substantial sum” to lead them and bring on their promising young players. Close, out of Yorkshire’s side for a fortnight resting his injured knee, said “I have heard nothing of this, but if I did I would be bound to consider it.” Lancashire was not allowed to approach Close, officially. Close would have to resign from the Yorkshire club and apply for special registration if he were tempted to move. Torrential rain had flooded Lord’s cricket ground just after lunch, when England, who had won the toss, had made 53 for the loss of Edrich’s wicket on the first day of the second Test against Australia. And Jenny Boy, 20-year-old sister of Beatle George Harrison’s wife Patty, was at Bow Street alleged to have told police that she had given up smoking cannabis resin when she took up meditation.

A trio of vandals sailed into trouble after commandeering a yacht on the River Ouse. The youths unhitched the boat from its mooring outside Fulford Yacht Club and headed down river. They were spotted going through Fulford by a member of the public who reported that fixtures were being torn from the vessel and thrown in the river. The boat eventually ran aground on a river bank at Naburn where the three tried to make their escape on dry land. And Prince William celebrated his 16th birthday, a shy teenager still coming to terms with the momentous loss of his mother.
