A RECORD number of pupils have won school scholarships for excellence in their art, academic and sporting achievements.

Ten year eight pupils at Terrington Hall School won scholarships for places at senior schools - the highest number awarded in the prep school's 97-year history.

Student Toby Welch’s portfolio of art, including works featured in Yorkshire Life, earned him a scholarship to Sedbergh School in Cumbria. He will join his brothers Harry and George who also won academic and sport scholarships.

Terrington Hall head teacher Stephen Mulryne said: "I could not be happier for our year eight pupils, all of whom have been offered places by their senior schools of choice.

"The achievements of our scholarship pupils are to be especially commended, particularly Sophie Derby’s remarkable achievement in winning both the prestigious C B Fry and Hesse awards.

"The hallmark of a Terrington education is that every child is given the opportunity to develop their talents wherever they lie and to progress to the school which suits them best.

"This year our leavers move on to nine different schools. This reflects the care with which each child’s interests, abilities and personal qualities have been developed.

"Whilst six of the current cohort of scholars have been with us since reception, four have joined us higher up the school, benefitting from the opportunities afforded by small class sizes and a broad curriculum taught by specialist staff.

"The past three years since I became head teacher have been an exciting time of expansion for the school, including the opening of the all-weather multi-sports facility, a huge take-up of our flexi-boarding provision and an increase in pupil numbers to almost full capacity.

"With almost 50 per cent of our year eight leavers winning scholarships to their senior schools, the future of the school and its pupils looks incredibly bright as we approach our centenary year of 2021."
