AS one of the two former Labour councillors for Acomb ward I must respond to Cllr Myers’ criticisms (“Working to protect Acomb open spaces”, Letters, June 12).

Cllr Tracey Simpson-Laing and I always sought to retain open spaces in Acomb ward, which for years had a deficiency of such.

As far as the Manor School site is concerned, as we went out of office our intention was that this area would be retained for the benefit of the community.

As for the other sites referred to, homes have been provided for the benefit of York residents, a higher priority as far as I was concerned. The former Viking Road shops was a very small site, the former Beckfield Lane tip site was always in the ownership of the council’s housing department and only the frontage area of Danebury Drive allotments was given over to housing, which also had the benefit of reducing a major nuisance problem for residents in that area.

I think that Cllr Myers should concern himself more with the deficiency of housing figures in his Conservative/Lib Dem submitted draft Local Plan.

I have more than a suspicion that this deficiency will come back to bite him and his group.

Hon Alderman David Horton,
