A NEW discount supermarket is set to be built in York.

A partially vacant former packaging warehouse on James Street will be demolished to make way for a branch of Lidl.

It will be the city's second branch following the opening of the Lidl store on Thanet Road in Acomb.

Under the plans, the building once occupied by packaging firm SCA will be replaced by a new £5 million store.

The supermarket will have 130 parking spaces as well as an in-store bakery.

Proposals say work will start in the autumn with the scheme taking 18 months to complete.

The new store is due to open next summer.

The project is being led by York-based property development company S Harrison in partnership with the owners of the site, Perio News Limited, and Lidl.

A planning application will be submitted by property development company S Harrison and Chris Hale from the company said: “With a high quality contemporary store design, which is easily accessible, the new Lidl will also have 130 car parking spaces.

"Providing local people with a spacious, attractive shopping centre, and a full range of competitively priced products, as well as an in-store bakery, the redevelopment has been welcomed by the local community.”

Thirty construction jobs will be created as part of the scheme and the store will employ 40 members of staff.
