PUPILS at York schools have been taking part in a cycling baton relay as part of the Schools Yorkshire Tour.
A baton is being cycled from school to school and between the region’s local authorities by pupils.
The tour, which aims to encourage more young people to take up cycling, began in Pickering on June 5.
Dunnington primary school pupils and The Lord Mayor of York, councillor Keith Orrell, had the honour of taking the baton for York from East Riding at the city boundary on Stamford Bridge viaduct last Friday.
Today (June 11), York pupils cycled the baton around the city.
Dunnington Primary school children began the relay by pedalling the baton over to Badger Hill Primary School. Badger Hill pupils cycled with the baton to Lord Deramore’s and the baton then went to St Lawrence’s, St George’s RC, Knavesmire, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Carr Junior School and then St Barnabas primary schools.
Tomorrow, St Barnabas’ primary school pupils will cycle the baton to York railway station and, with Cllr Keith Myers, pass it on to school representatives from Doncaster, who will carry the relay on to South Yorkshire.
