STAFF and students from a city college will be among those joining the parade at Saturday’s York Pride.

Askham Bryan College is getting ready to join the event which will bring together thousands of LGBT supporters from across the region.

Among them, and helping to carry a specially made rainbow banner, will be the college’s chief executive Catherine Dixon, who is also a trustee of Stonewall, a charity campaigning for the equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people across Britain.

She said: “As a college we take our commitment to inclusivity very seriously and I am delighted both personally and professionally to show our support for such an important event.”

Saturday’s event will start at the Minster and head through the city before finishing at Knavesmire, where the main event will take place with music, stalls, food and drink and fairground rides.

At the college’s stand on Knavesmire, visitors will be able to see giant African land snails.

And against the backdrop of a floral arch, students will be busy making colourful fresh flower bracelets to give away from the stand.

Meanwhile, there will also be plenty of activity at the Wildlife Park. Rainbow boas will be made in the craft zone and there will be rainbow trails and themed talks during the weekend.

The Pride parade is expected to get underway at about 11.45am on Saturday. Those taking part in this year’s parade are asked to arrive outside York Minster and on Duncombe Place between 11.30am and 11.45am.

From Duncombe Place, the parade will wind its way through Blake Street, Davygate and Parliament Street.

The route will also take in High Ousegate and Skeldergate before heading along Bishopthorpe Road.

It will then turn onto Campleshon Road and Knavesmire Road and finish at Knavesmire, where the main event will take place.

The parade will arrive at the Tadcaster Road end of Knavesmire at about 1pm.

The festivities will begin at 1pm and are expected to last until around 7pm.
