THE boss of York’s biggest bus operator says he is ‘incredibly proud’ to be sponsoring a category in the York Community Pride Awards.

First York is becoming involved in the event for the first time by lending its backing to the Good Neighbour of the Year award, which celebrates the city’s unsung heroes.

Managing director Marc Bichtemann said: “We’re incredibly proud to be sponsoring the York Community Pride Awards.

“As the largest York bus operator, we are committed to supporting our local communities through fundraising and involvement in local projects.

“At First York, we support a high number of city events by providing additional park & ride services, where possible, which means that visitors to the city have the option to use the Park & Ride service, rather than drive into the centre of York.”

He said that more recently, First had supported local events such as Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre, York Residents Festival, Jorvik Viking Festival, York 10K, York Races and YAMS (Yorkshire Agricultural Machinery Show).

“Our team of drivers, engineers and office-based staff regularly fundraise to support local charities and our national charity, Action for Children,” he added.

Last year, Wendy Bryant, 73, of Melwood Grove, Acomb, was crowned Good Neighbour of the Year after being nominated by her sister Vera Molloy, who said she did so much for neighbours, friends and family, without a thought for her own well-being,

She added: “She is the most caring, helpful, kindest unpaid carer I know. The time she gives to others is unending.

Others nominated included student nurse Carmen Dussoye, whose neighbour Elaine Harness said she helped save her husband’s life after he collapsed by giving CPR and mouth to mouth until paramedics arrived. Also nominated were husband and wife Tony and Averil Eayrs, whose neighbour Rachel Parker said they looked after their end of their cul-de-sac and were always supportive with frequent street parties.
