A YORK supermarket has relaunched in style after undergoing a major refurbishment.

The Morrisons store in Foss Islands Road, which celebrated its tenth birthday last October, had an extensive refit throughout April and May.

It relaunched on Thursday with a little help from cancer survivor Sam Brown, 13, and

a legion of Roman soldiers - ahead of the city’s Eboracum Roman festival this weekend.

Youngster Sam, from Haxby, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in January 2017, won a national competition to design a festive postcard exclusively for Morrisons, through the store’s partnership with CLIC Sargent - the charity for children and young people living with cancer.

Sam’s postcard was sent to some 150,000 Morrisons customers and graced the chain’s social media channels and this led to him being invited to re-open the refurbished store.

The shop has remained open during the work, which has taken place mainly at night.

Store community champion Wendy Davis said: “We would like to thank our customers for their continued support throughout the past ten years and especially during the disruption of the refit.

“We look forward to seeing all our customers enjoying their shopping experience with us.”

The new look instore offers visually improved signage, relocation of various departments and improved layouts in others.

New features include a barista bar, which has been created in an area at the front of the store, a new womenswear range, Nutmeg, in the clothing department and a party shop. The Health and Wellbeing and Free From ranges have also been extended.

Watch out for another Roman invasion this weekend, as the annual Eboracum festival invites you to experience the “sights, sounds and smells” of Roman life in York.

It takes places in the Yorkshire Museum Gardens with a living history camp, an archaelogical zone and birds of prey and military demonstrations, as well as parades and tours of the city.
