YORK Musical Society's music makers are to perform Edward Elgar’s The Music Makers in York’s twin city of Münster, Germany, in late June.

Before then comes the chance to hear the choir rehearse their performance as part of the Festival of Ideas at the Shepherd Hall, St Olave’s School, Queen Anne’s Road, York, on June 11.

University of York post-grad student Sarah Lucy Penny will sing the mezzo-soprano solo at the 7.30pm to 8.45pm rehearsal, conducted by David Pipe with piano accompaniment.

Hull-born Sarah Lucy, who first studied voice and percussion at school in her home city, is doing a Masters in solo voice ensemble singing, having gained a First in music at Edinburgh Napier University.

"I am really looking forward to singing with everyone and taking part in York Musical Society's concert rehearsal in York," she says. "After taking my degree at Edinburgh, I decided to move back to Yorkshire, so this event feels like it’s on my home ground."

York Musical Society also will be rehearsing Brahms’s Schicksalslied, the second work chosen for the Münster concert to mark the 25-year partnership between YMS and the Münster Philharmonischer Chor.

Tickets for the rehearsal are free but must be obtained in advance through the Festival of Ideas website, yorkfestivalofideas.com. Refreshments will be available afterwards.
