There is no excuse for the Costa Coffee branch at York station being neglectful in ensuring its hygiene was in keeping with health and safety standards (Costa café at station judged ‘filthy’, May 21). It must surely rest with the company management to ensure all their outlets are inspected on a regular basis. York station is a hub of activity. This was not a very good introduction to York as a first-class location.
Credit must be given to City of York Council officers for their diligence.

Editor’s note: Costa stressed that the café was closed for 24 hours following the food hygiene inspectors’ visit on February 20 for a deep clean. When inspectors visited the branch the next day they found it was ‘significantly improved’. “We take all hygiene ratings extremely seriously and ...have robust measures in place to address poor standards,” a Costa spokesman said.
