Scott Marmion ties himself in knots (Letters, May 22). He doesn’t want an elected second chamber, presumably because it might be controlled by a party he does not support.

On the other hand, he doesn’t want experts in the Lords either. He wants ‘wise’ people who do not belong in political parties, but declines to reveal how such people would be chosen and by whom. Taking back control?

Theresa May’s answer is to appoint a dozen new Tory peers to stack the votes, without protest from Brexiteers or right wing media.

Elsewhere the Governor of the Bank of England reveals to Parliament that Brexit has already cost the British economy £40 billion or £900 per household. Which no doubt makes Carney a traitor to some.

The EU is quietly getting on with things. In the past months the EU has signed trade deals with Canada, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam and Mexico. And now Australia and New Zealand are enthusiastically starting free trade talks with the EU.

So no trade deal advantage from leaving the EU. A huge swing towards Remain in Northern Ireland.

The UN worried about Brexit and the UK environment. Jobs haemorrhaging every week. What’s the point of Brexit?

We want Matthew to be the Lord Mayor

After reading yet another well informed, logical, unbiased letter from your best contributor (Bus project will be a waste of £200,000 Letters, May 22), I thought how good it would be if his comments were signed Matthew Laverack, Lord Mayor, instead of Lord Mayor’s Walk?

Come on Matthew, take the plunge and stand as an independent councillor.

My treatment at the hospital was so good

Recently I wrote to The Press regarding the kindness and consideration I received from the amazing staff at York District Hospital. I reiterate that yet again.

I would like to thank the diabetes unit where I was shown how to use a device (I am not very good where new tech is concerned) and the colonoscopy unit. The older nurses had such patience, telling me what would happen that day and at a future appointment. The doctor, too, was brilliant, putting me at ease.

We read criticism of the NHS, but I cannot fault it. Long may it exist for all users.
