PUT your favourite song on the jukebox and enjoy wine and food from all over the world at a new independent cafe, wine bar and deli on Walmgate.

The Press Kitchen, named as both a nod to The Press offices opposite the eatery and also in honour of the wine and olive oil-making process, opened on Saturday.

It is the latest venture from the owners of popular Spanish tapas restaurant Ambiente, which has branches on Fossgate and Goodramgate as well as sites in Leeds and Hull.

But manager at The Press Kitchen Paul Gamble, who worked for nearly two years in Ambiente in Leeds before joining the new restaurant, said it will be focusing on food and wine from all over the world rather than just Spain.

He said: "We want to create that neighbourhood atmosphere in the heart of the city centre and hope to cater for everyone. It's a small independent chain. We care about great food, great wine and giving good customer service. We love what we do. We've got 10 front of house staff and about half a dozen people working in the kitchen at the moment.

"The name links with the idea of a wine or an olive press and the wine making process. But it's also a connection to the history and the heritage of the newspaper."

The restaurant stretches across a number of rooms and has a meeting space upstairs as well as a courtyard area, which is open until 6pm.

And customers get a free token to select a song of their choice on the cafe's vinyl jukebox.

The site serves up breakfasts as well as lunch, dinner and sharing platters, sandwiches and cakes. Paul added that there are vegetarian and vegan options available, as well as takeaway items from the deli.

He said the company's main supplier sources their products from Bologna, an Italian city famous for its food, and Roost Coffee, based in Malton, has created a Press Kitchen blend for the site.

Paul said staff are particularly proud of variety of wines on offer at the restaurant and for people who cannot decide, the bar offers wine flights - smaller measures of three different wines. The Press Kitchen opens from 8am to 10.30pm.
