The Bus Improvement Project to cut congestion slowing buses down outside York Hospital is indeed a waste of £200,000.

Fiddling about with lanes, junctions and mini roundabouts is never going to achieve very much because it doesn’t address the fundamental problem of the almighty bottleneck on Wigginton Road that snarls up all traffic.

The £200,000 would be far better spent on a relief road through the Nestlé site; one open to all drivers wanting to get from one side of the city to the other, but who are currently forced to clog up Wigginton Road because all other cross routes have been denied to them.

If these drivers had an alternative route through Nestlé to get them across to the east of the city then the buses on Wigginton Road would find that congestion is dramatically reduced. Problem solved.

Streets must remain closed off to traffic

In response to AP Cox’s letter regarding the re-opening of Vyner Street and Fountayne Street, he firstly challenges why we (residents of said streets) should have more peace and quiet than any other streets.

I note from his address that he resides in a small cul de sac on the other side of the city. The old adage that ‘people in a glass houses shouldn’t throw stones’ springs to mind.

Secondly he suggests we should be ‘unadopted’ and foot the bill for carriageway maintenance. I can tell him that based on the last ten years it wouldn’t amount to much cost as zero maintenance takes place. Please come and inspect the potholes for yourself Mr Cox.

The streets are far too narrow for through traffic plus what about at least 35 residents cars on one side of Vyner Street - where does he suggest they go and park?

These two streets were closed off to through traffic many years ago for good reason and should remain so.

Surely the way forward is a proper link road through the former Nestlé site between Wigginton Road and the Haley’s Terrace roundabout, just like the new road between Heworth Green and Layerthorpe, which works brilliantly.

Open up these roads or just unadopt them

AP Cox is correct in saying that Fountayne Street and Vyner Street should be either reopened to traffic or unadopted.

The market value of a property is greatly increased if it is in a cul de sac, which these two streets are effectively, having been bollarded off.

In the following letter Paul Hepworth comes out with his ridiculous ideas about traffic flow, which amount to: “If everyone cycled, there would be no problems.”

I wish he, and anyone like-minded, would wake up to the fact that this is the 21st century. We need traffic, and dreams of his cycling heaven just don’t wash.

Paul quotes things like “induced traffic” and “suppressed demand for car use”.

I consider comments like this to be officious waffle. Who was it that said something like ‘There are three types of lies - lies, damned lies and statistics’?

Anyone who truly believes that opening roads up will not improve traffic flow cannot be taken seriously.
