York said congratulations to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in a myriad different ways.

Just as the Royal Wedding itself, the city's celebrations included modern and traditional forms.

Streets and communities came together to mark the special day as sunshine ruled and thermometer soared.

Above all it was a day for everyone, with all ages from tiny babies to great grandmothers catered for.

"I think no matter what you feel about the Royals, it is a chance and an excuse to get everyone together and have a nice party," said Amy Hoskin of Woodthorpe York Community Group.

Some celebrations included screenings of the Royal Wedding itself, others started after those taking part had watched at home or with friends.

Residents in three streets celebrated in traditional royal style.

Galtres Avenue off Stockton Lane, Telford Terrace of Albemarle Road and Greencliffe Drive, Clifton, closed their roads and laid out tables between the houses.

Just round the corner from the first street party, Rachael Atterbury of Galtres Road invited her guests  to a huge hot tub and dressed her house for the occasion.

Woodthorpe York Community Group took over Woodthorpe Green including its newly refurbished playground.  Dringhouses Scouts organised coffee and tea, local businesses Cox & Co and Belle's Bubbles laid on the food and alcoholic drink.

After eating and drinking it was time for sack races and other energetic ways to work off the calories with Kenny Stamp on the trombone providing the music.

The normal Saturday activities at Vale of York Academy, Clifton, were cancelled to make way for a big screening of the Royal Wedding and other entertainment.

The Belfrey Centre didn't need a street for a street party - instead it put the bunting up at the Storehouse in Mansfield Street.

Some organisations combined Royal Wedding celebrations with annual events, such as St Barnabas Church, off Leeman Road. Its annual Spring Festival had a distinctly royal feel.

For some members of North Yorkshire Police, celebration meant work.

Members of York South Safer Neighbourhood Team joined colleagues from other police forces on duty in Windsor ensuring that the huge crowds enjoyed the day in safety.

No matter which style of celebration was chosen, those who took part declared it was a day to remember.
