YOUNGSTERS joined in the royal wedding fever - by walking down the aisle themselves.

Schools in and around York have been getting into the spirit with their own themed celebrations.

Two pupils from Lakeside Primary Academy, in Rawcliffe, played bride and groom.

Oscar and Raya, both five, dressed up as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in honour of the big day, and to provide some last-minute sartorial inspiration to the bride-to-be, should she need it.

This term, Lakeside youngsters have been learning about the history of clothes and fashion and will be holding three fashion shows next week.

Ranges of clothes designed by pupils included themes such as the jungle, recycling, superheroes and pirates, all of which tie into things they have learnt on the curriculum.

The shows are a sell-out, but the organisers are making sure that ‘Harry’ and ‘Meghan’ get the best seats in the house.

Skelton Primary held a wedding cake bake-off judged by Nicola O’Keeffe from O’Crumbs in Haxby. A tempting fresh fruit sponge made by siblings Molly and Jacob Bolton won.

After the competition, they walked to St Giles’s church in the village to take part in their own wedding ceremony, where Molly ‘married’ classmate Jack in front of the rest of the school.

Later, the cakes were sold to fund new play equipment.

Children from Appleton Roebuck Primary also held their own version of the royal wedding, with the bride arriving at All Saints' Church in an open-topped car instead of a carriage.

Head teacher Andrea Commins got the idea when youngsters told her they didn’t know what happens at a wedding.

Bride for the day was Olivia Adams, seven, while her groom was Ellis Sykes, eight. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev Chris Coates.

Pupils from Queen Ethelburga’s, near Little Ouseburn, had a right royal knees up, enjoying a traditional afternoon tea and showing off their creative skills with a hat contest.

Other schools holding themed days include Stamford Bridge Primary, which held a croquet competition, flag decorating and quizzes, and Burton Green Primary, which held a street party in the sunshine.

Today, street parties are planned for Telford Terrace off Albemarle Road, Galtres Avenue off Stockton Lane, Greencliffe Drive near Clifton Green and the Storehouse youth centre on Mansfield Street.

Various churches in the city are hosting community celebrations, including St Luke’s, at the Vale of York Academy, and St Barnabas, Jubilee Terrace, while the Archbishop of York will visit Heworth Vicarage in Melrosegate for a combined royal wedding and FA Cup party.
