A FORMER Army captain from Tadcaster who helped Prince Harry set up the Invictus Games says he’s "humbled" after being invited to Saturday’s Royal Wedding.

David Wiseman said yesterday that he and his wife Lucy were "looking forward immensely" to attending the wedding at Windsor.

“We cannot be more thrilled for Prince Harry and Ms Markle,” he said.

“We wish them all the happiness in the world and we are humbled to have been invited to join them in their celebrations in Windsor.”

Captain Wiseman was shot in the chest by the Taliban while serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment in Afghanistan in 2009.

He told The Press then how his survival was miraculous, describing how a bullet went straight through his lung before lodging in his back, but missed a major artery and nerve by a few millimetres.

He worked on setting up the Invictus Games - Paralympic style events for wounded, injured and sick military personnel and veterans - in 2013/14, and competed in three, winning 14 medals, and was UK Team Captain in 2016.

He said yesterday he had been advising Prince Harry since 2013 on his interactions with the armed forces and in setting up programmes to support the armed forces community.

“The Endeavour Fund has been one facet of this work, supporting the ambitions of wounded, injured and sick personal and veterans (WIS) to use sport or adventurous challenge as part of their recovery and rehabilitation,” he said.

“Since 2013, we have backed around 70 Endeavours - big and small, domestic and international - that together have involved over 2,500 WIS and raising over £2.5 million for other forces charities. The Invictus Games was one such endeavour - of course the biggest and most well known.

“Throughout this experience, Prince Harry has been indefatigable in his pursuit to support the armed forces community. His support for this important section of society is undeniably impactful and it has been a pleasure to work with him.”
