VOLUNTEERS who raised £128,439 in a year have been praised for the support they give York cancer patients ‘facing the toughest fight of their life’.

The efforts of the Macmillan York Fundraising Committee won them the charity’s Fundraising Committee Of The Year award.

They beat their previous year’s record by £10,000, raising money through a series of events, including coffee mornings, cash collections, curry nights, festive lunches and carol services, as well as through involvement in Macmillan’s Race Day at York Racecourse.

Katrina Lane, York committee chair, said: “I am blessed with a fabulous, dedicated and hardworking committee.

“And it is through that teamwork, together with Macmillan Cancer Support’s wonderful staff, that we make things happen and achieve such amazing results, which mean we can increase Macmillan’s services in York.

“We must also not forget our loyal band of volunteers who turn out in all weathers to hold collection buckets and support in so many other ways and of course the generous and caring public who donate, buy tickets, supply prizes and offer endless enthusiasm.

“We could not do any of this without them. Thank you all.

“Together we are making a difference nationally and especially through our combined efforts locally.”

Sarah Child, fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in York, said: “This award is incredibly well deserved; the York committee continue to raise the bar for what is achievable and having raised £10,000 more than the previous year they are truly inspirational.

“This sum is enough to fund 4,587 hours of vital cancer care from a Macmillan nurse enabling local people facing the toughest fight of their life to receive the support they so desperately need.”

Fundraising for 2018 has already included the group’s annual curry night while a firewalk is planned for later in the year.

The group said 200 volunteers are needed for this year’s charity raceday on June 16 to sell raffle tickets and collect donations.
