YORK Central MP Rachael Maskell is to unveil a centuries-old landmark following three years of restorations.
The Red Tower, which marks the end of the walls on Foss Islands Road, will be formally opened tomorrow at 2pm(Saturday, May 19).
Ms Maskell has taken a special interest in the renovation of the Grade 1 listed building, which dates to 1490, and recognises its potential as a community hub.
She said: “The idea of a community cafe and local hub for residents and visitors alike is refreshing and the preservation of a neglected historic building is so important for future generations.”
The restoration work, which was hampered by the floods of 2015, was carried out by York
architects, Holland Brown, Croft Farm Construction of Dunnington and a group of dedicated volunteers.
The project was funded by Yorventure’s Landfill Communities Fund, City of York Council, Two Ridings Community Foundation and the Feoffees of St Michael’s Spurriergate.
All donations and income from hiring the tower will subsidise community use.
