PLANS for a massive digital modernisation of the Transpennine railway route through York has been welcomed by Transport for the North, a regional partnership of civic and business leaders.

A new ‘Digital Railway Strategy’ is set to mean faster, safer, more frequent and more punctual trains, with drivers no longer relying on traditional trackside signals.

Transport for the North said digital rail technology was one of the pieces in the jigsaw in transforming the railways' capabilities.
