JOY Division tribute act Transmission play the Victoria Vaults, Nunnery Lane, York, on May 19.

To mark their appearance, landlord Pete Connell, gig co-promoter Dave Sollitt and Vinyl Eddie, from Vinyl Eddie's record store in Tadcaster Road, are launching the first in a regular series of competitions in What's On with prizes of a vinyl album and tickets.

In this instance, Vinyl Eddie has kindly donated a copy of Substance, Joy Division 1977-1980, a double album on 180gm heavyweight vinyl, while Pete and Dave have provided a pair of tickets for Transmission's gig.

Transmission are devoted to recreating the atmosphere of a live Joy Division concert, emulating the sound of one of the most inventive, evocative and influential groups of their era. Joy Division were formed in the late 1970s and dissolved in May 1980 after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis, but the remaining members went on to form New Order and have achieved much success, both critical and commercial.

The influence of Joy Division, however, has been far reaching. They were considered the pioneering band of the post-punk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s. More than 30 years on, you can relive the dark, cavernous sound of Joy Division through Transmission's tribute show.

Tickets are still available for the 8pm gig, either at wegottickets.com/event/434873 or on the door from 7pm.
