JUNIOR Lifeguards in Bridlington did their bit for the environment by tidying up a local beach.

Twenty youngsters, who are all part of the STA Junior Lifeguard scheme at East Riding Leisure Bridlington, gathered on Bridlington’s north beach to carry out a litter pick and survey.

Joined by some of their parents, they covered 100 metres of the beach and the different types of litter collected were logged and the information was sent to the Marine Conservation Society.

After the survey, the children and their parents carried on collecting rubbish from another 400 metres of the beach, and gathered 8kg of rubbish in total.

The beach clean was organised for the Junior Lifeguards by David Evans and Clare Mortimer, both volunteers with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, along with Leanne Connelly, the learn-to-swim coordinator and Neil Horsman, the Junior Lifeguard instructor, both from East Riding Leisure Bridlington.

Youngsters taking part in the Junior Lifeguard scheme at East Riding Leisure centres learn about water safety, rescue techniques, first aid and CPR.
