AT a time when more people have been identified with various mental health issues it is shocking to hear that The Retreat has decided to close its inpatient services (“Inpatient care to finish at Retreat”, The Press, April 24).

As Dr Bob Adams said it is a great loss for York and a tragedy for all the people who will be denied this specialist care.

Who on Earth makes these decisions?

They certainly don’t listen to or take note of the professional views of the psychiatrists and doctors, all who must be appalled by this decision.

The closure of Bootham Park Hospital was another terrible loss for York.

William Tuke would have turned in his grave if he had known that this was going to happen.

We seem to be going backwards. William Tuke and the York Quakers seem to have had more insight and compassion in 1796 than we have in this day and age.
