TOOLS worth hundreds of pounds have been stolen from a popular greengrocers shop.

The Greengrocer of Acomb, which opened just five weeks ago, was broken into overnight.

Owners Sarah and Darren O’Mahony discovered power tools including a Makita drills, a chop saw, a circular saw and battery charger packs had been taken.

Sarah said she arrived at the shop at about 6am and saw that the gate was open.

She said: "They have broken in through the roof and then got out through the back. They have even used our crates to carry things away. It's hundreds of pounds worth of tools."

Sarah said the shop's homemade deli items, including sausage rolls, soda bread and chutneys, have been popular since the store opened so they had been using the power tools to create shelving and a rearrange the store layout.

She added: "We were planning to take the equipment home today. Luckily they haven't caused any damage but we are feeling a bit flat.

"People have tried to break into our van twice since we have been here too."

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed enquiries are ongoing including forensic examination of the scene.

He said: "The investigation is continuing to identify and arrest those responsible."
