A WOMAN'S body has been recovered from the River Derwent in Stamford Bridge.

Humberside Police were called to the scene near the bridge this morning.

A spokesman said enquiries are now underway to identify the woman and an investigation has been launched into the incident.

The police helicopter and emergency services were on the scene from about 8.10am.

Passer-by Philip Nixon said the air ambulance, the police underwater search team and a number of other police and ambulance vehicles were parked near Stamford Bridge over the River Derwent from about 8.15am.

He said he had seen officers in the water: "The police helicopter was hovering around. 

"There were officers climbing down the banks into the river. The car park was full of emergency vehicles. I drive through on my way to work and I could see the air ambulance circling around on my way towards Stamford Bridge."

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed that crews are on the scene.
