SEVERE traffic disruption is expected on a major York road from next week.

City of York Council have warned drivers that the replacement of traffic lights at the junction of Tadcaster Road and St Helen's Road will start on Monday, April 30, and could last up to six weeks.

Temporary lights will be in place fpr the duration of the works - which will run between 7.30am and 5.30pm on weekdays and 9am to 3pm on Saturdays - but the council has advised drivers to allow more time for their journeys, consider alternative routes or travel options like Park and Ride.

Councillor Peter Dew, executive member for transport and planning, said: "We don’t take decisions which cause disruption lightly, but we have to make these changes which will improve the junction for years to come.

"We’re doing everything we can to minimise the disruption this causes, and give road users all the information they need to plan their journeys."

Work will be suspended from Wednesday, May 16 to Friday, May 18, and on Saturday, May 26, due to race meetings at York Racecourse.

Some evening work will also be required, but bus routes should remain unchanged throughout the junction improvements.
