A COUPLE from near York are ready to hit the roads and travel the length of Britain on their classic scooters for charity.

Undertaker Hayley Owen, 29, who has her own funeral business in York’s Boroughbridge Road, and Dave Barker, 50, who is a funeral arranger and works with Hayley, both own Lambretta scooters, which they enjoy riding whenever they can.

The pair, who live in Moor Monkton and are getting married in June, are gearing up to travel more than 800 miles from John o’ Groats in Scotland to Lands End in Cornwall in aid of SANDS (Stillbirth and neonatal death charity), which Hayley has raised funds for before, and the Alzheimer’s Society.

They will start their charity ride at the end of May, and they expect to complete the journey in four days.

Hayley said: “I believe in putting something back into the community. This is a fun way to do it, Dave and I both love riding our scooters.

“I’m excited about doing the ride as it will be beautiful scenery and also challenging roads.”

Explaining why they have chosen to support SANDS and Alzheimer’s Society, Hayley added: “Alzheimer’s affects so many people and parents who lose babies need support. Both are good charities.”

This will not be the first time Hayley and Dave have travelled the length of Britain. They rode their scooters from Lands End to John o’ Groats in 2014 and raised funds for the Dogs Trust.

The couple are looking for businesses to sponsor them. Any firm that does will get a sticker on their scooters. Phone 01904 792525 for more details.

Members of the public who would like to sponsor them can do so by phoning the number above.

Last year, Hayley received a portable cuddle cot that she can offer to parents who suffer the heartbreak of losing their babies and lends it to other funeral directors in exchange for a donation to SANDS.

The cot is a cooling system that can be fitted to most Moses baskets, bassinets or prams and keeps the baby at an appropriate temperature so families can stay with them for longer.
