YOU reported the granting of a premises licence to Ambiente, triggering the go-ahead for their new wine bar in Walmgate (The Press, April 10).
You also report a compromise by Ambiente on the use of the rear yard; they agreed with the police that only 12 people be allowed in the yard.
Ambiente also offered to close earlier than they had originally proposed.
Neither of these represent a compromise by Ambiente.
The number of people permitted to use the rear yard and the timings are already a condition of the planning consent associated with the premises.
Other than seek fresh planning permission, Ambiente had no choice but to agree with the existing conditions.
Readers should also be aware that City of York Council had previously agreed with residents, where 18 propertiessurround and enclose the rear yard, that were it to be licensed there would be a negative impact on their quality of life. Despite this the Premises Licence was granted.
While wishing Ambiente every success with their new venture, the complete failure of City of York Council’s licensing hearing to protect the residents’ interest should not go unnoticed.
