A MAJORITY of York Press readers online want Britain to stay in the single European market after Brexit, according to a survey.

The study, run in partnership with Google Surveys, was completed by 1,600 people who visited the York Press website.

It showed that 56 per cent of readers believed Britain would be better off economically inside Europe, with 62 per cent saying Britain should continue to be part of the single European market.

Unsurprisingly, the figures showed a split between those who voted Leave and those who voted Remain in the referendum.

Among Leave voters, only 8 per cent think Britain is better off economically in Europe, while under a quarter of these voters think we should continue to be part of the Single Market.

Among Remain voters, 87 per cent say Britain is better off economically inside Europe and 86 per cent say we should continue to be part of the Single Market.

More than three-fifths of those surveyed on the site said they were not happy with the status of Brexit negotiations at the moment, with just a fifth saying they were happy and the rest unsure.

Among those who said they voted Leave, 45 per cent were unhappy with the status of negotiations compared to 35 per cent who were happy.

More than three-quarters of those who voted Remain -76 per cent- said they were unhappy, compared to 8 per cent who said they were happy.

However, most of those surveyed said they would still stick with how they voted in the referendum- 86 per cent of Leave voters and 94 per cent of Remain voters.

One in 12 Leave voters said they would act differently compared to one in 30 Remain voters.
