A FAMILY-RUN firm behind the YorkyPud Wrap, which became a viral sensation, has transformed one of its York branches to offer a diner as well as a shop.

The York Roast Co’s Stonegate shop has undergone a £150,000 makeover.

It was closed for 11 weeks while the work was carried out and reopened recently.

The new diner and shop is over two storeys, with the first floor seating 30-plus guests.

Hungry passers-by can now take a seat and enjoy wrapped-up roasts and sandwiches, all prepared in the downstairs kitchen.

Remaining sympathetic to the building’s 16th century roots, the new shop features solid timber tables and chairs complemented with natural, earthy tones, as well as a bright and contemporary geometric-pattern feature wall.

York Roast Co managing director Wayne Chadwick said: “What it has done is create a new dynamic for the shop.

"While it was a very popular takeaway, on really bad weather days it would affect business.

"Now people can come and sit in a warm environment.

“I am delighted with the makeover.”

He said: “The branding on the shop has changed.

“Our shops during the course of this year will have new colour schemes.

"We are going to individualise them.”

Mr Chadwick also said he is “delighted with the way the business is going forward.”

“We don’t take anything for granted because all our customers choose to come through the door,” he added.

In the future, he believes the firm has the capacity to open more shops.

He explained: “We don’t want to become a huge chain.

"We are a family-run business.

“We don’t want to end up in a position where we become like some other brands and employees become a number.

"We want to keep the family-run culture running through the business.”

A video showing the YorkyPud Wrap – beef, turkey, ham or pork wrapped in a huge Yorkshire pudding with vegetables, stuffing and gravy – was watched by millions of people online and attracted lengthy queues.

The video was watched by people worldwide, as far as Buenos Aires in Argentina.

The York Roast Co’s other York location is in Low Petergate, and it also has shops in Chester, Shrewsbury and Salisbury.
