GRAND Opera House staff have visited Waterstones, in Coney Street, York, to read up on The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini's international best-selling novel that has transferred to the stage.

Direct from two West End seasons, the play will be staged in York from May 8 to 12, when each ticket for The Kite Runner bought by book group members will include a drink. Customers will need to quote PLAYNDRINK when booking to receive this offer, which will be valid until May 12.

Adapted by Matthew Spangler and directed by Giles Croft, The Kite Runner will tour to 16 cities and towns in Britain and Ireland this year with its haunting story of a friendship that spans cultures and continents as an Afghanistani man now living in the United States seeks redemption by confronting his past.

Back then, Afghanistan was a divided country on the verge of war and two childhood friends were about to be torn apart on a beautiful afternoon in Kabul when the skies were full of the excitement of a kite-flying tournament. Neither Hassan or Amir could foresee the terrible incident that would shatter their lives forever.
