AFTER the termination of the contract to overhaul the Guildhall (The Press, April 10), City of York Council should tell us how much of the original £9 million cost has been spent, and what work has actually been completed.
Council leader Ian Gillies says: “I can’t say there will be no abortive costs, but they will not be significant.”
These ‘abortive’ costs must be published.
What Cllr Gillies calls insignificant, given the huge amounts of taxpayers’ money regularly wasted by his authority, and what the public call insignificant may differ wildly.
Does getting major decisions wrong appear in the job descriptions for council cabinet members?

Money should be spent on pavements
I THINK it would be a lot better if the council spent money on the loose, uneven, dangerous footpaths in the centre of York, before spending it on the Castle Gateway.
