SENIOR York councillors will next week be asked to approve an animal welfare licensing policy for the city.

It would set out rules for licenses which are issued to places which board animals, breed dogs and offer horse riding.

The regulations would also apply to places which keep dangerous wild animals, pet shops and zoos. Animals to be trained and used for exhibition must also be registered with the council.

Cllr Helen Douglas, executive member for housing and safer neighbourhoods, said councils do not have to have formal policies for animal licensing but it is considered good practice.

The authority's records show that besides licensing 34 animal boarding premises, York licenses eight pet shops, four riding schools and one dog breeder.

The sole licensed zoo is at Askham Bryan College, and City of York has registration for eight animals which can be exhibited.

The policies will be discussed at a public meeting of City of York Council's executive being held next week.
