A COUNCILLOR says there is “ a lot of concern” from residents about crime in the Walmgate area of York, as police investigate a stabbing on the city centre street.

North Yorkshire Police said they were called just before midnight on Wednesday after a report that a man had been stabbed on Walmgate.

The man, who in his 30s, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, for which he received treatment at York Hospital, the force added.

Police cordoned off a stretch of pavement on Walmgate yesterday while forensic inquiries were carried out.

Denise Craghill, a councillor for the Guildhall Ward, said the incident is a “great concern to residents and me as a councillor for the area.”

She said: “We don’t know the details of this particular incident and I wouldn’t want to make assumptions about what the incident was caused by.

“There’s certainly a lot of concern about crime and anti-social behaviour from quite a lot of residents in the area.”

She also said: “I was at a meeting on Wednesday with the Walmgate Community Association and housing officers from the council.

"Crime is something we are trying to tackle.

"We need more resources to address the problem and for all the agencies to work together to try and improve things.”

The Press has spoken to staff at shops near where the stabbing happened.

Giring Mahmud, who works at International Finest Foods, said: “I was shocked when I came to open the shop and found out what had happened.”

Alan Pearson, owner of Keal Teamwear, said: “It is worrying.

“We’ve got the wardens who come round.

"It seems to have made a difference with anti-social behaviour.

"They call into the shop and ask if there’s been any trouble.”

North Yorkshire Police said the investigation into the stabbing is ongoing and that no arrests have been made.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police commented: “We know this will be a concerning incident for residents. Officers will be conducting patrols in the area on Thursday to provide reassurance to the local community.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to phone North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting reference number NYP-18042018-0573.

Meanwhile, residents of Guildhall ward are invited to a meeting on Wednesday, April 25 with councillors and police officers.

The event is at Wellbeing Centre at 14 Merchants Place, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Organisers will discuss antisocial behaviour in the Walmgate area and residents will be able to have their say and hear about initiatives to reduce crime.
