A NUMBER of pubs in York are giving people a chance to enjoy a pint or two whilst learning about various topics from local scientists and researchers.

Seven pubs around York will host events as part of this year’s Pint of Science festival, from May 14 to 16.

Each event includes two or three talks.

Pint of Science is a non-profit organisation that brings scientists to pubs to discuss their latest research and findings with members of the public.

Sutlers Bar, in Fossgate, The Eagle and Child, in High Petergate, Walmgate Ale House, in Walmgate, The Fulford Arms, in Fulford Road, The Black Swan, in Peasholme Green, The Royal Oak, in Goodramgate, and The Winning Post, in Bishopthorpe Road, are all taking part in the festival.

Walmgate Ale House, which has hosted Pint of Science events before, is hosting three events this year, one on each day of the festival.

The titles of the events are Revolutionary Science, New technologies for the future, and Literally from Atoms to Galaxies.

Its owner Michael Hjort, said: “It is a lovely event and we are delighted to welcome it back, it’s great fun.”

The Royal Oak is also hosting an event on each day of the festival.

They are entitled Urban development against conservation, A changing world and Amazing evolution or simply messy?

The pub’s manager Gareth King said: “We did it last year. It’s a good opportunity for people to learn about science in somewhere they feel comfortable.”

The Pint of Science festival was launched after Dr Michael Motskin and Dr Praveen Paul - two research scientists at Imperial College London - started and organised an event called Meet the Researchers in 2012.

It brought people affected by Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Motor Neurone Disease and Multiple Sclerosis into their labs to show them the kind of research they do. It proved to be inspirational for both visitors and researchers.

They thought if people wanted to come into labs to meet scientists, why not bring the scientists out to the people? Pint of Science was then created.
