TWO York businessman are planning to sleep rough to raise awareness of homelessness.

The CEO Sleepout, which takes place on Monday, April 16, will see business people from across York sleeping under the stars.

They are aiming to raise more than £50,000 to help combat poverty and homelessness across the city.

According to research published earlier this year, 29 rough sleepers were recorded in York, a rise of more than 60 per cent year on year.

Among those taking part in the event is Steve Brown, managing director of Make It York.

As he gears up to spend a night outside, he hopes the sleepout will shine a light on York’s generosity.

He said: “Homelessness is a

countrywide issue, but something key partners and local charities

are also working together on to try and eradicate.

“I would like to see the problem solved, so it’s time to put my money where my mouth is.

“Although I won’t come close to experiencing true homelessness, I fully understand the seriousness of their situation.”

Also swapping his briefcase for a sleeping bag is William Derby, chief executive of York Racecourse, which is where the event will take place.

More than 50 of York’s senior executives will be sleeping in the stands pitch-side at the racecourse in a bid to raise more than £110,000, the CEO Sleepout total achieved by Newcastle’s business community earlier this year.

Mr Derby said: “The sleepout initiative is a brilliant way of raising the issue and helping to raise much needed funds for local charities.

“We were delighted to offer the venue and look forward to smashing our fundraising target.”

CEO Sleepout is a national charity which challenges company directors to give up just one night of comfort to raise money for those who find themselves without a roof over their heads.

Funds raised from the CEO Sleepout will go to local charities, including Changing Lives, who work on the frontline of homelessness and rough sleeping provision in the city, Acomb’s Chill in the Community cafe and arts hub, York foodbank and the Samaritans.
