STEELWORK structures have been put up at the site of the new York community stadium this week.

The Monks Cross site appears to be progressing, with two massive steel frames in place for the cinema and leisure buildings, and builders say even more work will be visible within the next few weeks.

Throughout April, work will continue on foundations at the site as more steelwork goes up, and pre-cast concrete stairwells and lift shafts will also arrive onsite and be installed, builders said.

The official Twitter account for the Buckingham Group Contracting site team - which is currently working on the York Community Stadium Project - posted this week it was “great to see the first raking steel beam being erected in the cinema”, referring to the more square framework seen in these pictures by Press photographer Frank Dwyer.

In the latest newsletter from the Buckingham Group and the York Stadium Leisure Complex, developers said “things have progressed well, despite weather conditions”, and special panels have been installed in the hoarding surrounding the site, allowing the public to look through and see what’s happening.

New, up-to-date visuals of the complex have also been added to the hoardings, to give passers-by an idea of what the finished building will look like.

Councillor Nigel Ayre, Executive member for leisure, culture and tourism with City of York Council, said he was pleased to see positive activity at the site.

Cllr Ayre said: "Having visited the site recently it is fantastic to see so much progress being made. Since the steel started to arrive a couple of weeks ago it has been amazing to see the structures start to take shape.

"Work is progressing on schedule and in the coming weeks more and more of the steelwork structures will develop. With so much going on it is exciting times for the project as we work towards opening the York Stadium Leisure Complex next year."

Once complete, the new site will include an 8,000 seat community sports stadium for professional football and rugby league games.

The leisure facilities will also include a swimming pool, gym, dance studio, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities and a sports hall with spectator seating.

Among the commercial development on the site will be a cinema complex with IMAX screen, five restaurants and a number of retail units.
