A POST Office that closed suddenly is set to reopen.

Dringhouses Post Office was situated inside the Mace shop, in Tadcaster Road in York.

The branch closed suddenly on November 21 2017, while the shop it was located inside remained open.

But the store also shut shortly afterwards.

Dringhouses and Woodthorpe Liberal Democrat ward councillor Stephen Fenton had said it would be a “serious blow” if Dringhouses was to lose its Post Office, with the nearest alternatives being Acomb, Woodthorpe and the city centre.

In January a Post Office told The Press the organisation was “working hard” to reopen the branch and it will now reportedly reopen on April 13.

A Post Officer advisor apologised for any “inconvenience” caused by the closure and said: “The new operators of the business are attending training prior to this and they will also receive on site support from the 13 to 20 April.

“We do understand the importance of Post Office services within the local community and hope that this information will ease any further cause for concern.”

Cllr Stephen Fenton welcomed the news and said: “Many residents have contacted me asking for information about when the Post Office will re-open, so it is great to have a date.

“I am sure that the Dringhouses community will support the business owners as they embark on this new venture.”

However the convenience store has not yet reopened and a spokesman for Mace said the shop was owned by an independent retailer.

A notice, from a Geordie and Kate McMillan, appeared in the window of the store in February to say there are plans to open the shop and that a premises licence will be applied for so that the store can sell alcohol.

The notice says: “Hopefully this store will be opening very soon under new ownership.

“We are very sorry for all the inconvenience and all the problems that there have been over the past months and look forward to seeing you all soon.”

A new cafe, called Café at Number 12, opened in the unit next door to the convenience store in October 2017 and cycle stands have been recently installed outside.

A number of new dog waste and litter bins have also been fitted across Dringhouses and Woodthorpe ward.

Nine dual use bins have been installed on Tadcaster Road so far to replace the old units.

A revised scheme to renew the Tadcaster Road junction with St Helen’s has also been announced. The plan would see a new pedestrian crossing installed outside the Cross Keys pub and the island on the crossing to the south of the junction removed. Traffic signals would also be refurbished.
