YOUNGSTERS at a York village primary school took part in a sponsored triathlon event today.

About 25 pupils at Long Marston CE School tried to cover as much distance as they could by running laps of the school field and playground, cycling on static bikes in the school hall, and swimming in their weekly swimming lessons.

The end goal was to raise money for a reading scheme for the whole school.

The school were hoping to be joined by paralympian Phillip Green, former Goalball player turned triathlete, but unfortunately he was snowed in on the day and unable to join in the fun.

About 11 children from Long Marston Preschool also took part, raising funds for equipment for the preschool.

The school PTFA (Parent, Teacher & Friends Association) ran a pop-up café and funds raised will go to Sports Relief.

The event was the brainchild of one of the school’s teaching assistants, Teddy Wilcox, ran a half-marathon distance of 13.1 miles during the event - or 98 laps of the field and playground to be more precise.

The school’s PE providers, Sporting Start, and children on the school’s sports council also contributed to the planning of what turned out to be an exciting, fun and very energetic afternoon for all involved.
