A NATIONAL annual guide has revealed what every York resident knows - that the city is the best place to live in Britain.

And Malton isn’t bad, either, according to The Sunday Times.

The newspaper’s annual Best Places to Live guide gave York the top spot, describing it as a “mini metropolis, with cool cafes, destination restaurants and innovative companies, plus the fastest internet in Britain.”

It also praises the city for its romantic beauty, period buildings and meandering river and for shedding its old-fashioned image.

Malton makes it into the top ten best places to live in the North and Northeast, in other words, east of the Pennine watershed, as do Harrogate and Wetherby.

The list takes into account a wide range of factors, from jobs, schools and broadband speed to culture, community spirit and local shops.

The methodology uses statistics, and the knowledge of The Sunday Times’s expert panel.

Helen Davies, The Sunday Times Home editor, said: “We’re championing York this year in honour of its bold approach to bringing the historic city into the 21st century without losing any character or community spirit.”
