FROM brewing to books, International Women’s Day was marked across Ryedale last week.

The day coincided with the annual International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day, which was marked by Malton brewery Brass Castle. Breweries around the world participated in the day, which this year was based around the theme “exotic”.

At Brass Castle, a group of female brewers, CAMRA members and publicans got together to create a four per cent mango pilsner, which should become available next month.

Amy Pulling, of the brewery, said: “It seemed very obvious we should be part of this. Women’s presence in brewing has changed amazingly.

“The face of beer and brewing has changed. The majority of our clientele in the taphouse are women who drink beer. We’re excited to be a part of it.”

Meanwhile, Year 3 children at St Mary’s RC School, in Malton, each chose an inspiring woman to research, and wrote a brief biography.

Teacher Rachel Monaghan said: “It has stimulated some fascinating discussions in class already.”

Pupil Daisy Conlan said: “I chose Malala Yousafzai. Bad people shot her because she wanted girls to go to school too, but she lived. Now she tells everyone how important education is – she is very brave.”

The children’s work will be displayed at Malton Library until Friday, alongside a display highlighting books relevant to the themes raised.

Librarian Helen Skewes added: “We have a wonderful display of books themed around International Women’s Day; books by women, about women, and for women of all ages.”
