A WILBERFOSS pie company won a prestigious industry award last week.

Totally Baked, which originally started as a hobby in 2017, claimed first place in the savoury category at the British Pie awards 2018, which took place on March 7 in Melton Mowbray - the home of the pork pie.

The company, run by Vicky Robinson and her husband Gavin, saw their pork, apple and fennel creation wow the judges.

They entered a total of five recipes into the awards, winning awards for four of them.

Also in the savoury category, their ham, brie and mustard pie earned a silver award, while their spinach and feta pie and spiced vegetable pie both won bronze awards in the vegetarian category.

A total of 963 pies were entered into the competition from 180 makers, including large national companies and supermarkets.

Gavin said: "To win so many awards against some very big names in the industry is a great achievement and I don't think it has quite sunk in yet.

"We feel so proud to be able to represent York and Yorkshire at a national awards ceremony, and to win one of the top prizes is something to be celebrated."

Vicky, who still works as a catering manager at the University of York, and Gavin, who gave up his job to work at Totally Baked full-time last October, get help with the business from their children, Alfie, 12, and Aimee, 9, so it's a real family affair.

Vicky said: "Baking and selling what I make is a dream come true and to have industry recognition for my bakes is incredible.

"I couldn't do it without my family and we all work really hard to hopefully create something amazing."

As well as looking at wholesale, the pair say their ultimate goal is to have a shop or bakery of their own, and they'd love for Alfie and Aimee to continue to be involved.

Totally Baked pies can be found at Malton's monthly market, Knaresborough and Elvington farmers' markets and The Coffee Bureau on Micklegate, as well as at upcoming festivals in Ripon and Whitby.
