A BIKE roadshow is on the way to York's universities and colleges, in a bid to encourage students to walk or cycle to their classes.

The city council has joined forces with Get Cycling and York's universities and colleges on a sustainable travel push.

Roadshows are now planned for Askham Bryan College, the University of York, York St John University and York College offering travel advice and help to both students and staff as part of the Travel2Campus initiative.

The roadshows include bike-maintenance workshops, bike health checks and a pedal-powered smoothie maker. People can also pick up a free copy of a cycle guide highlighting safe cycle routes, and providing basic cycle maintenance and safety tips for riders.

Cllr Ian Gillies, Leader of City of York Council, said: “Students make up a significant proportion of York’s population and it’s vitally important that we encourage them to make sustainable travel choices while they’re here.”

The next roadshow will be held at York College from 13 – 15 March. Details at www.itravelyork.info/for-schools/travel2campus-project.
