MARK Nevin, double BRIT Award-winning Fairground Attraction founder and songwriter, brings his band to Selby Town Hall on March 17.

Nevin is best known as the writer behind the multi-million selling Perfect, which this year celebrates 30 years since topping the charts across Europe, as well as in Britain and Australasia, along with Fairground Attraction's double-platinum album First Of A Million Kisses.

Since Eddi Reader and Nevin's band split in 1990, his songwriting talents have been in demand from Ringo Starr, Kirsty MacColl, Joe Cocker, Albert Hammond, Julio Iglesias and even David Bowie, and he co-wrote Morrissey’s 1991 album, Kill Uncle, along with a number of tracks from 1992's Your Arsenal.

And if you have never heard Mary Coughlan sing Nevin's sublime love song Like A Leaf From A Tree, you should break off from reading this story now to hunt it down on YouTube...

...Back to Mark Nevin, who has established himself as a solo artist too, typified by his latest album, My Unfashionable Opinion. Next Saturday, his Selby audience can expect a night of humorous, moving and inspiring stories between songs old and new, when he is joined on stage by original Fairground Attraction bandmates Simon Edwards on bass, Roger Beaujolais, on vibraphone, and Richard Marcangelo on drums.

"Mark Nevin is one of the most acclaimed and accomplished songwriters of the late 20th and early 21st century," says Chris Jones, Selby Town Council's arts officer Chris Jones.

"He was the creative force driving one of the biggest bands of the late '80s in Fairground Attraction and the musical brains behind Morrissey at the height of his post-Smiths fame. Mark’s tales of life in the music business feature a veritable who’s who of major players. It feels like he’s worked with pretty much everyone, while also remaining a fan with wide-eyed, boyish intrigue and great stories throughout.

"Mark will be performing with a top-drawer group of musicians, featuring original Fairground Attraction bandmates, and comes with a reputation for having an absolutely fantastic live show."

Tickets cost £14 on 01757 708449 or at selbytownhall.co.uk or £16 on the door from 7.30pm for the 8pm start.
