SNOW has fallen in York and across the region this morning, causing "treacherous" driving conditions in some areas of North Yorkshire.

A wintry blast, dubbed "The Beast from the East", is hitting Britain with snow and freezing temperatures.

North Yorkshire Police's control room has tweeted that the weather is affecting most roads around the county this morning, and that areas around Harrogate and Craven are particularly bad with snow and ice.

The control room added: "Some areas are treacherous. Take care if you have to travel."

A car has overturned this morning on Dishforth Road in Sharow, near Ripon, and the male driver has been released by firefighters. 

North Yorkshire Police said the driver is not believed to have been injured.

Police and fire crews were called to the crash at about 5.10am.

There has also been a crash on Fair Head Lane in Grosmont, where a Nissan pick-up collided with a BT pole. Police were called to the collision at 10.05am.

North Yorkshire Police said the driver and four passengers of the vehicle were checked over by an ambulance crew, but none of them are believed to have suffered serious injuries.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for snow in York and North Yorkshire today and a more severe amber warning is in place for the area between 3am and 11am.

Temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as -4C in York, with highs of 1C.

A yellow warning has also been issued for snow in York and North Yorkshire tomorrow. Forecasters expect temperatures in York to dip to -5C, and to rise no higher than -1C.
