WITH Spring on the horizon, gardeners in York are being urged to consider composting.

City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council are hoping to encourage residents with a “buy one get one half price” offer on composting bins, for friends, neighbours and relatives to share the deal.

More than 60 per cent of the contents of the average rubbish bin is biodegradable, and more than 30 per cent can be turned into peat-free compost.

Cllr Andrew Lee said: “You may be surprised at how much of your waste can be composted at home.

“Fruit and veg peelings, crushed eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds, paper, card and garden waste are all compostable.”

Volunteer group North Yorkshire Rotters will be attending events during the Spring with information and advice. Visit www.northyorks.gov.uk/ways-reduce-and-reuse for further details.
