A MEMBER of the public came to a woman's rescue after she entered a river in a North Yorkshire town.

North Yorkshire Police said it was called shortly after 10.30pm yesterday by a person concerned about a woman in a "distressed state" by the River Nidd in Knaresborough.

Within eight minutes, officers arrived at the scene near the Half Moon pub to find a woman in the water being held onto by a member of public, the force added.

It said that the woman exited the river and was then taken to hospital by ambulance to receive care.

A police spokeswoman commented: "Officers would like to thank the members of public who stayed with the woman until emergency services arrived."
