ANOTHER passenger has claimed he was trapped by the door as he was trying to get off a bus in North Yorkshire.

Pensioner David McKay, of Sherburn in Elmet, said his arm was stuck in the automatic door of an Arriva bus after he had travelled to Selby about a month ago, and was stepping off in Gowthorpe.

He said: "I got pulled for about two feet but fortunately it stopped and he (the driver) opened the door. It spun me around.

"I called him a dozy bugger and said he should pay more attention."

Mr McKay contacted The Press to tell of his experiences after reading recently about a Selby man whose foot became trapped in an Arriva bus’s door as the vehicle started moving off on the A19 at Escrick near York.

The Selby man said he had to hop along the road on the other leg until the driver realised what had happened and stopped the bus.

He said he might have been killed had he been a child or an elderly woman, or if another five seconds had passed by before the driver realised his foot was stuck in the automatic door, and said his experiences had sent his anxiety levels through the roof.

Arriva apologised to him for any distress the incident may have caused but could not comment because it was an on-going case

Mr McKay, 74, said he had not lodged any formal complaint about his incident.

The Press asked Arriva for comment on his case, and specifically asked whether its buses had any mechanism to ensure they sprang open again if they started to shut and trapped an obstacle such as a passenger’s arm or leg..

Jon Croxford, managing director for Arriva Yorkshire, did not answer this question but said: “The safety of our passengers is our top priority and we have reached out to this customer to discuss this incident in more detail.

"All of our vehicles comply with current safety regulations and our drivers receive frequent safety training to try and reduce the likelihood of incidents like this happening."
