A CHARITY which tackles youth homelessness in York is to hold its annual sleepout next month - just as York may be experiencing its coldest weather of the winter.

Individuals and teams will be sponsored to spend the night out under the stars on Friday, March 9, with just a sleeping bag and cardboard to shelter them from the elements, whatever the weather.

Forecasters believe there could be bitterly cold easterly winds over the region in late February and early March, bringing a risk of snow showers.

The sleepout at Tang Hall Community Centre will raise funds for SASH, which helps prevent young people from becoming homeless by offering them a room in the home of a volunteer.

Spokeswoman Clare Usher said it will feature live music by York Glee Singers, a ‘best cardboard shelter’ competition, films about SASH’s work and breakfast in the morning for the hardy participants.

“Since 2012, the SASH Sleepout has raised over £36,000 for the charity, which provides support and a safe place to stay,” she said.

John Reeves, chairman of developers The Helmsley Group, who is taking part in the sleepout for the third time running, has urged others to come along next month and support the ‘awesome charity.’

He said: “Youngsters in trouble need all the help they can get and in our view SASH provide a practical and safe alternative to hostels for youngsters who may have housing issues. We are proud to help and hope others will too.”

Ruth Fawcett, SASH business development manager, said the sleepouts were a very important event in the charity’s annual fundraising calendar.

“They bring together local supporters who want to help vulnerable young people in the York area and are a very effective way of raising awareness of the issues faced by those who have to use our services,” she said. “Even if they find it a challenge, people always say they are glad to have done it.

“In 2017, SASH helped over 300 young people avoid homelessness in York, North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire through its emergency Nightstop and long-term Supported Lodgings projects.

“Forty of these were from York alone. There is still plenty of time to sign up and the event is open to anyone who is fit and healthy, though under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult."
