A TRIAL 18 month long HGV ban on the level crossing between Malton and Norton will start to come into force next Monday, February 26.

The ban will stop vehicles heavier than 7.5 tonnes from using the level crossing over the railway between the two towns, and signs will go up advising drivers of on the approaches to the level crossing and also on the A64, along with directions for alternative routes.

The ban is designed to help to prevent congestion and improve air quality in the area, particularly at Butcher Corner in Malton.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Don Mackenzie, who is responsible for highways, said: “Trading Standards officers will initially monitor the ban’s effectiveness. It is an experimental measure designed to improve air quality and it will be monitored for the duration of the scheme.

"Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes will be told to use the A64 to get to their destination without using the level crossing between Malton and Norton."

Some of the work to erect the signs around the level crossing will be done at night when the trains are not running, with traffic management measures in place. While this is happening, the council hopes workers will be able to replace eight bridge lighting columns on County Bridge at the same time.
