ROCK musician Sting has launched the British premiere tour of his north eastern shipbuilding musical The Last Ship with an early-afternoon performance of songs and an introductory talk at Leeds City Varieties Music Hall.

Northern Stage’s tour of 12 venues will open in Newcastle, close by to Sting’s hometown of Wallsend, where he could see ships being built at the end of his street, before playing Leeds Grand Theatre from May 1 to 5 and York Theatre Royal from June 25 to 30.

“It’s the most personal story I’ve ever told,” Sting revealed to invited guests at lunchtime today, when he was joined on stage by principal cast members Richard Fleeshman, Charlie Hardwick and Joe McGann. “To write a musical is the most difficult, challenging, wonderful thing I’ve done – and the best musicals are always about communities under threat.”

York tickets can be booked at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk or on 01904 623568; Leeds, 0844 848 2700.
